The Pentagon’s plan to broadcast the execution of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been halted, marking a significant reversal in a controversial proposal. Hasan, who was convicted of a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, was set to be executed by firing squad, with a global audience watching the event unfold live.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously announced the livestream plan, but it was met with widespread criticism. As a result, the live broadcast idea has been scrapped, although the execution will proceed as planned.

President Trump took to social media to announce the decision, utilizing the opportunity to criticize his predecessor by claiming the Obama administration’s FBI failed to prevent the Fort Hood shooting. This narrative aligns with Trump’s ongoing critique of past administrations, despite controversies surrounding his own tenure, such as the January 6 Capitol riot.

Trump expressed, “With all of that being said, I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well-meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device.” He affirmed that Hasan would still face execution by firing squad.

The initial plan for a public execution was met with bipartisan discomfort. Even Vice President J.D. Vance, a member of the administration, expressed doubt about the livestream, stating, “I’m not going to be watching it,” and, “I don’t know that that’s actually going to happen.”

Democratic leaders, while relieved by the cancellation, criticized the administration’s handling of the situation. Sen. Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island) commented, “This episode highlights the impulsive and dysfunctional civilian leadership from the White House and U.S. Department of Defense.” He further criticized Hegseth for his tenure as Defense Secretary.

This incident has intensified scrutiny on Defense Secretary Hegseth, with both Republican and Democratic figures questioning his leadership. Despite the backlash, the administration continues to support Hegseth, raising questions about the decision-making processes within Trump’s team.
