In a recent discussion, President Donald Trump outlined his concerns over the potential fallout from increasing taxes on the wealthy. Known for his policies favoring the affluent, Trump raised alarms about a proposed tax increase, asserting that it might drive millionaires out of the country.

During a session in the Oval Office, Trump expressed his apprehension, stating, “I think it would be disruptive because a lot of the millionaires would leave the country,” as reported by Mediaite. Trump emphasized that with modern conveniences, relocation is easier, and countries that have increased taxes on the rich have seen a decline in their wealthy population. He noted, “You lose a lot of money if you do that.”

Despite these concerns, the administration and congressional Republicans are considering a reconciliation bill that might extend the 2017 tax cuts, many of which are set to expire. Some White House officials have suggested allowing the tax cuts for high earners to lapse, which would increase their rate from 37% to 39.6% for individuals earning over $609,351 and couples earning over $731,201.

Earlier this month, Trump reportedly showed some willingness to entertain the idea of a tax hike during a meeting with Republican senators, though it prompted criticism from allies like Fox News host Sean Hannity, who described the move as contrary to Trump’s beliefs.

According to Bloomberg News, increasing taxes on millionaires could potentially generate $400 billion over the next decade. Despite this potential revenue, Trump’s public image as a protector of the wealthy remains a significant consideration in his decision-making.
