Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Undergoes Another Draining Amid Renovation Challenges
In a continuation of efforts to refurbish the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, crews are once more draining it as President Donald Trump’s renovation project faces further setbacks. Initially aimed to be completed by July 4 in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the project has encountered several obstacles.
President Trump originally envisioned a renovation that would endure a hundred years. However, shortly after the renovation’s initial completion, the pool experienced an algae bloom, and the new coating began peeling. Trump attributed the damage to vandalism, though critics argue that it resulted from substandard repair work.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, responsible for the National Park Service, communicated with conservative podcaster Katie Miller, indicating that the current draining was a planned procedure. He mentioned that remnants from a large Independence Day fireworks display might still linger in the water.
Burgum explained to Miller, “Drain the water, clean up the fireworks stuff. Repair the vandalism that was done. Fill it back up again.”
Trump’s initiative to revamp the Reflecting Pool is among several projects he has initiated in Washington, D.C., including the demolition of the White House’s East Wing for a $400 million ballroom and the proposal for a significant arch connecting the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
The Reflecting Pool project began with the intention to beautify it in time for the nation’s 250th birthday. Water was initially drained, and the pool’s bottom was painted “American flag blue.” In May, Trump announced on social media, “The goal is to have it done, at this higher level, prior to July 4th — We are ahead of schedule!”
Post-renovation problems quickly emerged, with Trump pointing fingers at vandals. Court documents revealed that the National Park Service reported an incident involving a cut liner to the U.S. Park Police on June 9.
Recently, former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn pleaded not guilty to allegations of deliberately damaging the Reflecting Pool. Hearn claims he was inspecting the peeling sealant when instructed by a park worker to release a piece.
Hearn’s legal team and Trump administration critics view the charges as an overreach, suggesting Hearn is being unfairly blamed for inadequate repair efforts. Three additional individuals have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing paint pieces, all pleading not guilty.
The Reflecting Pool remained closed during the Independence Day festivities, which featured what Trump touted as the largest fireworks display worldwide. Trump had announced that the pool would need to be drained again for further repairs.
Burgum stated that the administration would not seek new bids for the repairs, saying on CNN’s “State of the Union”: “We’ll use the same company because they did a fantastic job.”
Ohio-based Green Water Solutions secured a $1.7 million contract for a water-purification system, while Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded $14.7 million for repainting and waterproofing the pool’s concrete surface.
Democratic lawmakers are scrutinizing the project, questioning its costs and the extent of taxpayer funding involved.
