Protests Erupt Over Fatal Shooting by Immigration Officers

Protests Erupt After Fatal Shooting by Immigration Officers

Amid bone-chilling temperatures, hundreds gathered in Ann Arbor to protest the recent fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis. The incident, captured on bystander videos, sparked outrage nationwide.

Pretti, 37, was among a group monitoring immigration officers when he was thrown to the ground, assaulted, and shot. Despite possessing a legally owned firearm, video evidence did not show him brandishing it, contrary to claims by Trump administration officials.

Gus Teschke, from Ann Arbor Indivisible, stated, “He wasn’t a threat. They just executed him,” highlighting the growing discontent against ICE and Border Patrol officers.

Senate Divided Over DHS Funding Amid Shooting Controversy

The fatal shootings of Pretti and Renee Nicole Good have caused Democratic U.S. Senators to oppose the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill. This opposition raises the specter of a potential government shutdown by the week’s end.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer condemned the shootings, emphasizing that Democrats will not support the appropriations bill if it includes funding for DHS. Schumer called for common sense reforms within the Department.

While six out of the 12 annual spending bills have been signed into law by President Trump, the remaining six face Senate deliberation. House Democrats are in revolt, urging for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Pressure Mounts for Action

Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell expressed the need for action, stating, “We have to do something.” She affirmed that Senate Democrats are resolute in their stance against the DHS funding bill.

The White House is pushing for the swift passage of the spending package to avert a government shutdown. President Trump’s administration seeks to avoid any disruptions in government operations.
