Arizona’s school voucher program is under scrutiny following a recent audit that has reignited long-standing concerns over financial mismanagement. Educators have been vocal about the potential for misuse within the system, a sentiment now supported by findings from a state audit.
Marisol Garcia, President of the Arizona Education Association, claims these financial discrepancies are fueling public interest in implementing stricter regulations on school vouchers.
“It used to take me months to be able to get approval for me to take my eighth graders on a city bus down to the public library, where some of these families are buying tickets to Disneyland and taking their kids to trips in Europe and those get approved almost immediately,” Garcia explained.
In contrast, state superintendent Tom Horne defended the program, stating it is “being operated appropriately and has been falsely and unfairly attacked.”
