Saginaw Bay Region Chooses Democratic and Republican Nominees

Michigan Special Primary Elections Results: Greene and Tunney Win Nominations

In the Saginaw Bay region of Michigan, voters have spoken in the special primary elections for the open state Senate seat, with Chedrick Greene securing the Democratic nomination and Jason Tunney clinching the Republican nomination.

Chedrick Greene, a veteran and Saginaw fire captain, emphasized his working-class background and dedication to defending freedoms during his victory speech at a Bay City union hall. He highlighted the importance of protecting and building on the state’s working class to improve affordability, safety, and freedom.

On the other side, Saginaw lawyer Jason Tunney, the Republican nominee, criticized Greene and Michigan Democrats for focusing too much on federal issues and neglecting local concerns like education scores. Tunney outlined his priorities of growing Michigan’s job market, supporting law enforcement, and enhancing education outcomes to create a business-friendly and desirable state for residents.

Unofficial results indicate that both Greene and Tunney garnered over 50 percent of the vote in the primary elections. The upcoming May general election will determine whether the Democratic Party can maintain a narrow 19-18 majority in the state Senate.

The 35th state Senate district has been without representation since Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet vacated the seat in January 2025.
