Sen. Elissa Slotkin Stands Her Ground Against Justice Department Inquiry
In the midst of a heated political climate, Michigan’s Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin has taken a bold stance by refusing to comply with a Justice Department investigation concerning a contentious video she helped organize. The video in question urges U.S. military personnel to resist unlawful orders, a message that has sparked significant controversy.
Slotkin’s legal team has informed U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro of her decision not to engage in a voluntary interview. Additionally, her lawyer has requested that all documents related to this investigation be preserved for potential litigation. This move signals a potential shift in the ongoing standoff, leaving the Justice Department to decide whether to escalate their inquiry or reconsider their approach.
‘It’s not gonna stop unless I fight back’
Last year, alongside five fellow Democratic lawmakers with military or intelligence backgrounds, Slotkin co-created a 90-second video encouraging military members to adhere to established protocols and dismiss any orders they deem illegal. This video has drawn sharp criticism from Republican circles and caught the attention of former President Donald Trump, who has accused the lawmakers of sedition and suggested severe punishments.
Following the video’s release, investigations were initiated, including one by the Pentagon into Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a participant in the video. The FBI subsequently contacted the lawmakers, indicating a broader inquiry by the Justice Department.
Slotkin recounts that her legal advisors initially advised caution, suggesting the controversy might dissipate over time. However, increasing security threats, including a bomb threat at her Michigan farm and threats to her family, led Slotkin to adopt a more confrontational stance. “And I said, ‘It’s not gonna stop unless I fight back,’” Slotkin explained.
Democratic senators draw a line
Despite the voluntary nature of the requests from the FBI and Justice Department, Slotkin’s legal team has decided against further cooperation. Her lawyer, Preet Bharara, has formally declined interview requests and called for the immediate termination of any ongoing investigations related to the video. Slotkin has not ruled out litigation, asserting that all options remain viable.
Senator Kelly has also resisted these inquiries, having filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon in response to their actions. A federal judge recently remarked on the lack of Supreme Court precedent to justify the Pentagon’s response, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
A rising profile
While Trump frequently targets political adversaries, these confrontations sometimes bolster their public profiles. Senator Kelly, for example, raised significant campaign funds following the controversy. Similarly, Slotkin’s political career has been on an upward trajectory, with speculation about her potential candidacy in the 2028 presidential race.
Having previously served in a highly competitive House district, Slotkin won her Senate seat in Michigan despite Trump’s success in the state. Her vocal opposition to Trump and advocacy for more aggressive Democratic strategies have cemented her role as a formidable figure in her party.
“If I’m encouraging other people to take risk, how can I not then accept risk myself?” Slotkin stated, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of political adversity.
