OpenAI’s New Strategy: Ads for ChatGPT Users, A Revenue Shift

OpenAI to Introduce Ads in ChatGPT: A New Era for Free Users

As ChatGPT continues to capture the attention of millions worldwide, OpenAI is set to implement a significant shift in its approach to monetization. With a vast user base, only a fraction currently pays for the service, prompting OpenAI to explore new revenue streams by introducing advertisements.

Starting Monday, OpenAI will display ads to select users in the United States, marking a strategic move to convert free users into revenue-generating ones. These ads will appear for some who use the free version of ChatGPT, as well as for subscribers of the newly launched ChatGPT Go tier, which costs $8 per month.

Ads will be tailored based on users’ current and past interactions with ChatGPT, including previous searches and ad interactions. However, OpenAI assures that, for the time being, external data will not be used for ad targeting within the platform.

The introduction of ads has been anticipated since OpenAI hinted at this strategy months ago. Last month, the company officially announced the decision to integrate ads into ChatGPT.

This development has sparked discussions, notably with OpenAI’s competitor Anthropic, leading to a social media exchange and Anthropic’s Super Bowl advertisement highlighting potential trust issues as ads become part of ChatGPT’s service.

As OpenAI ventures into advertising, the reaction of users and advertisers will be closely monitored to gauge the impact and reception of this pivotal change.
