Iowa Rep. Zach Nunn Supports ACA Tax Credits While Aiming Repeal

Rep. Zach Nunn’s Mixed Stance on Affordable Care Act Sparks Debate

Despite advocating for the extension of Obamacare tax credits, Iowa Representative Zach Nunn remains committed to dismantling the Affordable Care Act. His recent vote has left many questioning his long-term legislative goals.

On January 1, more than 126,000 Iowans experienced an increase in their insurance premiums after the expiration of the tax credits. To address this, Nunn supported a Democratic proposal to renew these credits for another three years, joining 16 other Republican House members in a similar political predicament. Details of his decision can be found here.

Speaking at a GOP meeting in Urbandale on January 28, Nunn stated, “Let me be very clear, I’m not in favor of the ACA going forward. I want the ACA gone as much as any of you. But I’m not going to leave 126,000 Iowans to wait for Congress to get its job done.” This statement can be viewed in its entirety here.

Nunn emphasized that Republicans have prepared legislation to “immediately end” Obamacare. Nevertheless, the bill to extend the credits successfully passed the House on January 8 with a total of 230 votes, yet it remains doubtful that the Republican-controlled Senate will address it. This legislative move affects approximately 22 million Americans, who must now decide whether to pay increased premiums, opt for less comprehensive coverage, or forgo insurance altogether.

This legislative action follows the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) from last year, which aims to reduce Medicaid funding by up to $1 trillion over the next decade. Consequently, an estimated 15 million Americans may lose their health insurance by 2035. These cuts are primarily intended to finance tax reductions for affluent individuals and large corporations.

Nunn’s support for the OBBB was publicly highlighted in television ads, which he later celebrated. More information about these ads can be found here.

Unrig Our Economy, an advocacy group focused on promoting the interests of working-class individuals, criticized Nunn’s approach to Obamacare. Leor Tal, the group’s director, stated, “Nunn and his Republican colleagues voted for the largest cuts to health care in history in order to give more tax breaks to billionaires. Now, they’re doubling down on attacking Americans’ care by trying to dismantle the ACA. Americans don’t need higher costs and more barriers to coverage, they need Republicans in Congress to stop voting to take away their health care.”

Public opinion seems to align with this sentiment, as a KFF tracking poll indicates a 58% approval rating for Obamacare as of January 2026.

As Nunn seeks a third term in office, Democrats have marked him as one of the most vulnerable Republican members of Congress facing reelection challenges.
