Florida Lawmakers Push to Rename Palm Beach Airport After Trump

Florida Lawmakers Progress on Renaming Palm Beach Airport After Trump

The potential renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to honor President Donald Trump is advancing through the Florida legislature, despite debates over state funding, trademark rights, and Trump’s personal history. The Republican-led House has approved the proposal, while the Senate is considering a similar measure that has passed the Rules Committee.

House members voted 81-30 to support the name change to President Donald J. Trump International Airport (HB 919). Bill co-sponsor Rep. Meg Weinberger, R-Palm Beach Gardens, emphasized, “This is the President’s hometown, he lives five miles away from the airport.”

Kim Kendall, another co-sponsor and former air traffic controller, praised Trump for his recent contributions to airport infrastructure modernization. Rep. John Snyder, R-Stuart, expressed confidence that the renaming would enhance the airport’s status.

However, Democrats suggested postponing the renaming until Trump’s presidency ends, citing his impeachments and felony convictions. Rep. Ashley Gantt, D-Miami, voiced her dissatisfaction with Trump’s legacy, while House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa, highlighted potential financial interests, noting a trademark filing by DTTM Operations LLC for the airport’s new name.

The Senate’s budget proposal includes $2.75 million for sign replacements and other updates at the airport, which serves approximately 8.6 million passengers annually. Sen. Shevrin Jones, D-Miami Gardens, raised ethical concerns about potential financial benefits for Trump, given the trademark application.

Jones also criticized Trump’s past racially insensitive actions, highlighting a social media post involving former President Obama. Despite prior support, Jones argued against the renaming, emphasizing the impact of Trump’s actions.

Sen. Debbie Mayfield, R-Melbourne, requested $5.5 million for the renaming, including funds for rebranding and technology updates. Mayfield acknowledged the controversy surrounding Trump’s actions but cited his contributions to the country.

The legislative initiative would also allow the state to name other major airports in Florida, but currently only proposes a change for Palm Beach International Airport. Approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and an agreement with the trademark holder are required to proceed.
