85-Year-Old Goes Viral on TikTok for Wrinkle-Free “Glass Skin” Secrets

A viral TikTok video has left viewers in awe of Young-ja Joo, an 85-year-old grandmother flaunting remarkably youthful, wrinkle-free skin. Her granddaughter, Ava Lee, a skincare influencer, believes that her grandmother’s lifestyle choices have played a significant role in maintaining her radiant complexion.

Lee, who is also the CEO of the skin supplement company byAVA, showcased her grandmother’s skincare routine on the platform, highlighting Joo’s smooth and glowy skin. While genetics certainly contribute to skin aging, Lee attributes her grandmother’s “glass” skin to specific lifestyle factors she shared with Business Insider.

Diet Rich in Protein

A crucial element of Joo’s youthful appearance is her diet, particularly her intake of protein. “She always emphasizes to me that you always have to have a balance of greens, carbs, and protein,” Lee shared. Joo’s diet includes fish as a primary protein source, which she consumes four to five times weekly.

Dr. Derek V. Chan, a board-certified dermatologist in Manhattan, explains that a balanced diet with adequate protein provides essential building blocks like collagen necessary for healthy skin.

Sun Protection

Another pillar of Joo’s skincare regimen is sun protection. She’s been using SPF cream since her 30s and consistently covers up when outdoors. “Whenever she’s out in the sun, ever since she was a teenager, she’s always worn a hat, sunglasses, and something to protect her skin,” Lee noted.

Dr. Chan emphasizes that SPF is a vital part of an antiaging skincare regimen, recommending sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Dr. Heather Kornmehl adds that sunscreen should be supplemented with UV-protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats for comprehensive sun protection.

Simple Skincare Routine

Keeping her skincare routine minimal, Joo primarily uses hydrating moisturizers from affordable Korean brands. Lee mentions that while her grandmother occasionally tries new products, she mostly sticks to the basics.

According to Dr. Chan, maintaining a healthy skin barrier through moisturizing can help prevent the formation of wrinkles and prominent lines. He advises using a moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher for optimal results.
