Travis Dodson: From Iraq Injury to Paralympic Sled Hockey Champion

In the aftermath of a life-altering event, Travis Dodson’s journey from injured Marine Corps veteran to champion paralympic athlete is a testament to resilience and transformation. A grenade blast in Iraq not only claimed the life of his friend but also took both of Dodson’s legs, setting him on an unforeseen path toward greatness in adaptive sports.

Struggling to adjust to his new reality, Dodson eventually discovered sled hockey, which became his passion and purpose. Through tireless dedication, he secured a place on the Team USA paralympic sled hockey team, earning two gold medals. As the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games approach in Milan, Italy, Dodson aims to lead his team to a third consecutive victory.

Transitioning Through Challenges

After the devastating explosion in February 2007, Dodson faced immense physical and emotional hurdles. Despite the loss of his legs, he remained conscious immediately following the attack. “Really just being lucky, you know, to have a hand grenade go off probably a meter, meter and a half away from you and then to survive that is obviously in and of itself just pretty lucky and amazing,” Dodson shared with sports reporter Simone Eli.

Initially, Dodson retreated into isolation, grappling with the changes to his body and identity. Support from family, fellow veterans, and therapists helped him re-engage with life, pushing him to explore adaptive sports at the University of Illinois. His talents qualified him for the 2014 Sochi Games in cross-country skiing and the biathlon, but it was para ice hockey that captured his heart.

Empowering Others Through Sport

Dodson’s involvement in adaptive sports proved pivotal in his recovery and personal growth. He credits the discipline and focus of sports with preventing him from “kind of losing it, honestly.” As the oldest member of his team at 40, he brings experience and leadership to a talented group poised for success at the upcoming Paralympic Games.

Outside of competitions, Dodson dedicates his time to mentoring young disabled athletes, inspiring them to pursue their passions. “There’s a lot of young kids that are the same. Either they were born that way or they’ve been recently injured, and they’re trying sled hockey, and they see us, and that’s what they want to aspire to be,” he explains. His efforts aim to nurture the next generation of disabled athletes, guiding them to achieve their full potential.
