Tyler Vandenberg, a former U.S. Marine Corps reservist and two-time Jeopardy! champion, is now channeling his ambition towards a political career. At 31, Vandenberg is campaigning for a congressional seat in California’s 6th district, which has undergone significant changes due to redistricting.
From Marine Reservist to Political Aspirant
Vandenberg’s seven-year service in the Marine Corps, beginning in 2018, was primarily in the reserves. His military experience, he believes, equipped him with the confidence to pursue a role as a legislator. In an interview with Military.com, he expressed his motivation for entering politics, stating, “I was very concerned about what was happening to our country.”
Military Experience and Personal Growth
Vandenberg’s journey in the Marines commenced with Officer Candidates School in 2018, followed by tank training. He witnessed the phase-out of Marine Corps tanks as part of Force Design 2030. Reflecting on his military service, he shared with Military.com, “My time in the Marine Corps was a real kind of change in the way that I did things because it made me always conscious of wanting to do that as excellently and as thoroughly as possible.”
It’s a huge benefit to my life. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it.
Transitioning from tanks, Vandenberg worked as an intelligence officer for approximately five years, serving in various locations including Hawaii and Germany.
Education and the GI Bill
Before his military service, Vandenberg studied international relations at American University. He described it as “a wonderful institution” that guided him towards his career goals. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in public policy at Harvard University, a possibility made feasible by the GI Bill. “I absolutely could not afford to go to an Ivy League school if the military hadn’t been there for me and if these veterans benefits hadn’t been there for me,” he acknowledged.
The Jeopardy! Connection
Vandenberg’s appearances on Jeopardy! during the pandemic added another layer to his unique profile. Encouraged by his chain of command, he wore his Marine Corps uniform on the show. His battalion commander advised, “Marines don’t lose.” Vandenberg’s performance earned him significant winnings and a place in a special tournament, where he won a $50,000 prize.
A Legacy of Service
Vandenberg’s family history includes his grandfather and uncle serving in the Navy during different eras. His decision to join the Marines was driven by his desire to actively participate in matters of international relations, an area he studied in college.
California’s 6th District and Political Ambitions
The recent redistricting in California has left the 6th District, which Vandenberg is contesting, without an incumbent. The district, encompassing Sacramento, is characterized by its diverse immigrant communities. “It’s a very diverse place. It looks like America, right?” Vandenberg remarked, emphasizing the rich cultural tapestry of the area.
Vandenberg’s campaign focuses on issues of affordability and government accountability, resonating with widespread concerns about the rising costs of living and governance. His political journey was sparked by the 2024 election and subsequent events in Congress that he found troubling.
“I felt that I’d done it once before, and maybe now is the time for people like me to step up and for veterans to step up who do think of it in those terms and who want to make sure that there’s a country and a democracy that we served once and that we want to serve again,” he said, underlining his commitment to public service.
