Michigan Ballot Campaigns for 2026 and Beyond

Analyzing Michigan’s Ballot Campaigns: A Shift in Focus for 2028

Michigan’s ballot campaign landscape is witnessing a shift as several initiatives have suspended their efforts to make it to the November ballot this year. Among them is One Fair Wage, aiming to create a unified minimum wage for all workers in the state, which fell short in collecting the required 223,099 signatures.

Despite setbacks, One Fair Wage remains determined, refocusing its resources on supporting an initiative petition to restrict political contributions by public utilities and state contractors. The group sees this as a stepping stone towards broader reforms in 2026 and 2028.

Another campaign, Invest in MI Kids, has also postponed its signature collection after failing to reach the necessary 446,198 signatures to raise taxes on high earners for school funding. The group is now gearing up for the 2028 election cycle.

Similarly, a ballot measure for ranked-choice voting in Michigan and the Michiganders for Money out of Politics campaign have redirected their efforts towards future elections, anticipating a more favorable outcome in 2028.

Despite these setbacks, Sean McBrearty from the Money out of Politics campaign remains optimistic, emphasizing the need for grassroots efforts to drive change in Michigan. The campaign aims to collect 356,958 signatures by May 27 to qualify for the November ballot.

While uncertainties loom over this year’s ballot initiatives, the groundwork laid by these campaigns sets the stage for a potentially transformative 2028 election cycle in Michigan.
