Delta Airlines Suspends Special Services for Members of Congress Amid Government Shutdown
In a response to the ongoing partial government shutdown, Delta Airlines has announced the temporary suspension of specialty services for members of Congress. This decision comes as a consequence of the Department of Homeland Security shutdown, impacting resources and leading to TSA officers working without pay.
Changes in Flight Perks
Delta Airlines will pause special services such as airport escorts and other red coat services for lawmakers. Instead, members of Congress will be treated like any other passenger based on their SkyMiles status. This move aims to prioritize the safety of all passengers and Delta’s employees amidst the challenging environment caused by the shutdown.
CEO Outrage and Industry Response
Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed his outrage over the shutdown and the unpaid TSA officers during an interview with CNBC. He criticized the use of essential security agents as political pawns, emphasizing the need for swift resolution. While Delta took action, other major airlines did not confirm imminent changes to their specialty services.
Political Impasse and Legislative Efforts
The shutdown has led to a deadlock in Congress, with Democrats demanding changes, particularly for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), before funding the Department of Homeland Security. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer highlighted the importance of funding TSA workers promptly to address airport security concerns, urging negotiations on ICE reforms to continue separately.
Despite attempts to address specific issues within DHS, Republicans have pushed for funding the entire department. A recent Senate bill aimed at prohibiting preferential screening for members of Congress at airports has passed but awaits consideration in the House of Representatives.
