Michigan Governor Advocates for Increased Investment in Pre-Kindergarten Education
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently visited a Saginaw early childhood center to engage with young students and advocate for increased investment in Pre-Kindergarten education and literacy programs.
In her Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal, Governor Whitmer has allocated $181 million to expand Pre-K for All, a program aimed at providing free preschool education to 4-year-olds to better prepare them for kindergarten and future academic endeavors.
Additionally, the budget includes $625 million for literacy programs that focus on early intervention, evidence-based reading instruction for educators, literacy coaching in classrooms, and targeted support for students who require extra assistance.
Whitmer emphasized the importance of building upon the existing Science of Reading initiative, a literacy legislation passed in 2024, to further enhance educational outcomes for Michigan’s youth.
The governor is optimistic that bipartisan support for these education initiatives will lead to the necessary funding to implement and sustain these programs effectively.
