Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Joins Michigan Senate Race

Former Wayne County Health Director Dr. Abdul El-Sayed has officially entered the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, becoming the third Democratic candidate to submit nominating petition signatures. El-Sayed is vying for the nomination alongside Congresswoman Haley Stevens and state Senator Mallory McMorrow in what is shaping up to be a competitive primary battle.

Endorsed by Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, El-Sayed has positioned himself as a progressive candidate advocating for policies like Medicare for All and stricter regulations on corporate political contributions. His campaign focuses on addressing the frustrations of the people with government, emphasizing the need to challenge the status quo and combat insider politics.

During the submission of his signatures to the state Bureau of Elections, El-Sayed expressed his commitment to representing Michiganders who feel marginalized by the current political system. He highlighted the increasing hardships faced by many residents, such as the challenges of affording basic necessities like groceries and healthcare.

El-Sayed, who previously ran for governor in 2018, emphasized the urgency of bringing about change and disrupting traditional political practices. His campaign collected approximately 30,000 signatures, underscoring grassroots support through volunteer and staff efforts.

With the Republican primary fronted by former Congressman Mike Rogers, the Democratic candidates, including El-Sayed, are gearing up for a spirited contest to secure the nomination and ultimately challenge their opponents in the general election. The race for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan promises to be a closely watched and fiercely contested affair.
