Arizona Heritage Center to Undergo Extensive Renovations
The Arizona Heritage Center in Tempe will close its doors later this month for a significant renovation project that will last over a year. This closure, set to begin on May 17, involves the replacement of the building’s fire suppression system and other essential upgrades.
David Breeckner, affiliated with the Arizona Historical Society, explained the necessity for these improvements. “The building’s just about 32 years old, which does not sound old at all when you’re a historical society but it’s our facility that needs the most TLC,” he noted.
The center had previously faced a closure last fall to address flood damage from Valley storms. Breeckner highlighted the importance of these repairs, stating, “The flooding damage was absolutely a major focus for us throughout the fall and winter, where we had to close for three months to address that issue. But this [the new closure] really stems from a report we received from the Tempe Fire Department speaking to our fire suppression system and the need to replace and modernize it for health and safety reasons.”
Despite the closure of the museum galleries, the Arizona Historical Society assures that public programs and events will continue. Activities such as trivia nights, storytelling events, and educational programs conducted in classrooms will still be available to the public.
