Australian Man Faces New Charges in Deadly Bondi Beach Hanukkah Attack

Australian Man Faces Additional Charges in Bondi Beach Massacre

In a tragic incident that shocked Australia, a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach turned deadly when two gunmen opened fire, resulting in the death of 15 people. Australian authorities announced on Wednesday that one of the accused, Naveed Akram, will now face 19 additional charges linked to the attack.

Already facing 59 charges, including murder and attempted murder, Akram’s new charges were added to the case register on April 15. These include 10 counts of shooting with intent to murder and six counts of discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest. Akram, 24, has not yet entered a plea.

The attack, which occurred during the Jewish holiday in December 2025, was reportedly inspired by the Islamic State group, according to Australian police. Akram was wounded in a shootout with law enforcement, during which his father, Sajid Akram, was killed.

A procedural hearing took place at Sydney’s Downing Center Local Court concerning a suppression order, which protects the identities of victims and survivors who have not publicly identified themselves. Although a video link was planned for Akram to participate from jail, he did not appear onscreen, as reported by the Australian Associated Press. A subsequent hearing is scheduled for June.

Initial court documents reveal that the attackers began their assault by hurling improvised explosive devices at the crowd. Although these devices failed to detonate, a larger explosive was discovered in a vehicle adorned with Islamic State flags, belonging to Akram.

This incident is under investigation by three official inquiries, marking it as Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in 29 years. One inquiry has recommended stricter gun control measures following an interim report released in April. This is part of a broader royal commission, the country’s highest form of public inquiry, which is also examining antisemitism and the circumstances surrounding the Bondi shooting. These public hearings commenced on Monday.
