Luka Doncic Reflects on Lakers’ Playoff Exit and Future Plans
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff journey was marked by the absence of their star, Luka Doncic, who confirmed he wasn’t close to returning to the court during the postseason. Doncic suffered a grade 2 hamstring strain on April 2, sidelining him for the Lakers’ last 15 games, including their playoff matches. Despite a surprising first-round victory over Houston without their star player, the Lakers’ season concluded with a 115-110 defeat against the reigning champions, Oklahoma City Thunder, who swept the series.
When asked about his potential return, Doncic stated, “I know some people wanted me (to come) back, but obviously I wasn’t close to clearing. If I could be out there, I would be, 100%.” He continues to focus on recovery, engaging in running and shooting drills, but has yet to participate in contact practices. His full recovery is projected to take another week or two, aligning with the typical two-month timeline for such injuries.
Despite the abrupt end to the season, Doncic reflected positively on his inaugural full season with the Lakers. He averaged impressive stats with 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds over 64 games. His collaboration with LeBron James and Austin Reaves flourished towards the end of the regular season, contributing to the Lakers’ 14-2 run in March, prior to the injuries he and Reaves sustained in Oklahoma City.
“Obviously this season didn’t end how we wanted, but I feel like the last push we made in the end of the regular season, we thought we could compete for a championship,” Doncic shared, expressing his appreciation for playing alongside James and Reaves. “Playing with AR and LeBron, it’s an incredible experience.”
Off the court, Doncic faced personal challenges, announcing his decision to not participate in national duties with Slovenia this summer. The decision comes as he aims to spend time with his daughters and pursue joint custody. “First of all, I want to spend time with my daughters, and that’s probably the only thing that’s on my mind right now,” he explained.
While LeBron James considers his future after completing his 23rd NBA season and Austin Reaves anticipates contract negotiations with the Lakers, Doncic remains committed to his journey with the team. Acquired from the Dallas Mavericks in a significant trade in February 2025, Doncic solidified his commitment by signing a three-year, $165 million extension last summer, ensuring his presence with the Lakers for the foreseeable future.
Doncic conveyed his satisfaction with his current situation, stating, “I feel very comfortable. I like living here. I like playing for the Lakers. It’s one of the best organizations in the world, so just being a Laker means a lot to me, and I feel very good here.”
