Arizona Lawmaker Urges Immediate Release of DACA Recipient
In a dramatic turn of events, a Tucson woman finds herself at the center of a heated immigration debate after being detained by federal agents. The incident has prompted a local representative to demand her release, citing protections under a federal program for undocumented immigrants.
Federal agents detained Karla Toledo, 31, after reportedly entering her residence without a warrant, according to surveillance footage obtained by the Arizona Daily Star. Toledo, who has lived in the United States since the age of one and has no criminal record, is a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Rep. Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat from Tucson, has been vocal in her opposition to Toledo’s detention, which took place at an Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Tucson. Grijalva stated, “I’m calling on ICE to immediately release Karla, who was reportedly taken by federal agents from her home earlier today after they entered without a warrant.” She further criticized ICE’s actions as a disregard for constitutional rights.
Grijalva’s concerns are echoed in a tweet where she described the detention as terrorizing the community, calling for ICE to release Toledo immediately.
Despite Toledo’s protective status under DACA, the Department of Homeland Security has not clarified the reasons for her detention. This incident appears to fit a broader pattern of similar actions under the Trump administration, which has consistently argued that DACA recipients remain vulnerable to deportation, as reported by Arizona Public Media.
