In today’s economy, gig workers face mounting challenges, as evidenced by a recent report from Defend America Action, which highlights the financial struggles encountered by those in the gig economy under the current administration.
The gig economy, comprising over 50 million U.S. workers, includes DoorDashers, Uber drivers, freelancers, and others providing services primarily through online platforms. This sector is among the fastest-growing in the job market.
However, gig workers are experiencing heightened difficulties due to fluctuating employment and pay, compounded by rising tariffs, the conflict in Iran, and reductions in Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
Gas prices have surged by 60% following the start of the Iran war, impacting rideshare drivers who must bear fuel costs themselves, as companies like Uber do not cover these expenses. Independent truckers face similar financial burdens.
John Mejia, an Uber driver from California, shared with The Guardian, “A few weeks ago, I filled up my hybrid car for $36. Now it’s $60.”
These rising fuel costs contribute to overall inflation, with American consumers spending an average of $2,300 more on goods and services last year compared to 2024.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is expected to further strain gig workers, particularly through a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid, potentially leaving 7.8 million Americans without health insurance. Notably, 20% of Medicaid beneficiaries are self-employed.
Additionally, the discontinuation of enhanced tax subsidies for Affordable Care Act plans may force 4.2 million individuals to either bear higher insurance costs or drop coverage, with 38% of this group being self-employed.
The report attributes these economic pressures to policies under the Trump administration, supported by congressional Republicans. It states, “Instead of protecting gig workers and self-employed Americans against higher costs, Republicans in Congress are driving countless hardworking Americans to lose life-saving coverage and go without care on top of skyrocketing prices.”
