Since its debut, the “Power” franchise has captivated audiences with its gripping storytelling and strong character development. Launched by media mogul 50 Cent, the original “Power” series ran successfully on Starz from 2014 to 2020, before expanding into a sprawling universe with multiple spin-offs and prequels.

Following the recent conclusion of “Power Book II: Ghost” and future plans to wrap up “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” and “Power Book IV: Force” by 2026, fans have eagerly anticipated the next chapters in this enthralling saga. On July 22, it was confirmed that two new series are in development, promising to expand the “Power” universe further. A prequel, “Power: Origins,” and a spin-off, tentatively titled “Power: Legacy,” are set to debut soon.

“Power: Origins” will delve into the early lives of iconic characters Ghost and Tommy, exploring their rise as young entrepreneurs in New York City’s bustling streets. Mekai Curtis, known for his role in “Raising Kanan,” will reprise his portrayal of a young Kanan Stark. However, casting for the younger versions of Ghost and Tommy remains underway. The series description teases a “fun, rambunctious exploration” of these ambitious characters as they strive to leave an indelible mark on the city’s criminal landscape.
Deadline reported that Mekai Curtis will continue his role as an early adult Kanan Stark, a character he has portrayed throughout “Power Book III: Raising Kanan.” Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, the franchise’s executive producer, originally played Kanan in the main series. The prequel’s storyline introduces new characters like Branford ‘Breeze’ Frady, who plays a pivotal role in shaping Ghost’s criminal ambitions.
Meanwhile, “Power: Legacy” is in the early stages of development, with a writer’s room now in session. Speculation abounds about where the plot might take Tariq and Tommy, whether back to New York City, off to Chicago, or somewhere entirely new. Fans eagerly await more details on this continuation of the “Power” narrative.
Amidst the excitement surrounding these developments, thoughts naturally drift to other beloved Black TV characters who could have shone brightly in their own prequel series. Ideas for such projects have floated around for years, with some, like the “Jodie” spinoff from “Daria,” nearly coming to fruition. In a March 2024 statement, MTVE Studios expressed hope that the project could find a new home, stating, “We have loved working with Tracee, Grace and the whole team on creating a film that is full of joy and genre-bending fun with an inclusive, diverse, and incredible cast.”
