Jon Gruden’s Lawsuit Against NFL Moves Forward as League Plans Appeal
In a significant legal battle, former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden is set to continue his lawsuit against the NFL, as the league prepares to challenge the Nevada Supreme Court’s recent decision. This development marks a pivotal moment in the case concerning Gruden’s allegations against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Nevada Supreme Court’s ruling has allowed Gruden to bypass arbitration, a process the NFL initially sought to enforce. The league plans to request a rehearing from the same court, which had previously overturned a panel decision in May 2024 that supported arbitration. Notably, in October, the full court granted Gruden a hearing, further advancing his legal pursuit.
Gruden’s lawsuit, initiated in 2021, accuses the NFL of executing a “malicious and orchestrated campaign” to tarnish his career. The case revolves around leaked emails containing offensive content, which allegedly led to Gruden’s resignation from the Raiders. “I’m looking forward to having the truth come out and I want to make sure what happened to me doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Gruden expressed in a statement to ESPN.
Following his resignation in October 2021, Gruden filed the lawsuit, seeking monetary damages for the damage to his career and endorsement opportunities. The NFL’s appeal to Nevada’s high court in 2022 was a response to a Las Vegas judge’s rejection of the league’s attempts to dismiss the lawsuit or mandate arbitration overseen by Goodell.
The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 decision, found the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution “unconscionable” and inapplicable to Gruden as a former employee. This decision supports Gruden’s stance, potentially setting a precedent for how similar cases might be handled in the future.
Gruden’s history with the Raiders spans multiple decades, having coached the team both in Oakland and Las Vegas. His career highlights include a Super Bowl victory with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a stint as an ESPN analyst. Recently, his professional endeavors include a consulting role with the New Orleans Saints and part ownership of the Nashville Kats in the Arena Football One league.
