Vice President Vance to Attend Marines’ 250th Anniversary Beach Event

Vice President Vance to Celebrate Marine Corps Anniversary at Camp Pendleton

In a significant display of military prowess and tradition, Vice President JD Vance is set to join a high-profile event at Camp Pendleton, Southern California. This occasion marks the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary, featuring an impressive beach landing demonstration with amphibious vehicles and aircraft. Vance’s presence at the event, scheduled for Saturday, October 18, underscores his unique status as the first Marine to hold the vice presidency, as confirmed by White House officials.

Joining Vance at this celebratory event will be Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan, and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric M. Smith. Titled “America’s Marines 250: From Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength,” the event is part of a yearlong series of activities honoring the Marine Corps’ storied history. The anniversary celebrations began in January and will culminate in November with the Commandant’s Birthday Ball in Washington, D.C.

This celebration occurs amidst a federal government shutdown causing significant anxiety among military families concerning their financial security. Maggie Meza, executive director of the San Diego Chapter of the Blue Star Families, a national nonprofit, highlighted concerns regarding military pay continuity. However, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson assured that military personnel will receive their October 15 paychecks, as the Pentagon can allocate approximately $8 billion in unused funds for this purpose.

Camp Pendleton, renowned for its role as a premier Marine training site since the 1940s, offers unmatched opportunities for amphibious assault training due to its strategic location and expansive facilities. Situated between San Clemente and Oceanside, the base spans 125,000 acres, including 17.5 miles of coastline, providing a perfect setting for training exercises crucial to the Defense Department’s focus on the Indo-Pacific region. Brig. Gen. Nick Brown emphasized the base’s vital role, stating, “Camp Pendleton remains the cornerstone of training for the I Marine Expeditionary Force and our operating forces.”

Brig. Gen. Brown further stated, “It offers some of the finest amphibious ranges anywhere in the world — designed to sharpen warfighting skills and ensure our Marines and sailors are ready for any mission.” This commitment to excellence aligns with the Commandant’s vision and bolsters the readiness and deployability of U.S. forces globally.

The event has also attracted the attention of local leaders, including San Clemente Mayor Steve Knoblock, who will attend to express his community’s support for the base, describing it as essential for the nation’s freedoms. “Our coastal community is a military town that loves their neighbors,” Knoblock remarked, highlighting the deep-rooted connection between Camp Pendleton and its surrounding communities.
