Maricopa County Sees Surge in Evictions Amidst Rising Costs
Maricopa County is experiencing a significant increase in eviction filings, marking one of its busiest Octobers on record. With landlords submitting over 7,500 eviction cases, the county is on track to see its second-highest annual total to date.
Scott Davis, spokesperson for the Maricopa County Justice Court, highlighted the concerning trend by noting last year’s unprecedented number of eviction filings, which exceeded 87,000 cases. “This year, if the monthly trends hold true, we’ll probably end up at 84,000, which will make it our second highest year ever,” Davis stated.
The average amount owed by tenants facing eviction judgments has been reported to exceed $3,100. Despite the year’s high numbers, Davis mentioned a potential reprieve in the coming months. Historically, eviction numbers tend to decrease in November and December, as landlords are generally hesitant to proceed with evictions during the holiday season.
