An Initiative to Provide Winter Shelter for the Homeless in Kalamazoo
In preparation for the upcoming winter season, Kalamazoo is taking proactive steps to address homelessness by organizing a shelter program. The city and Kalamazoo County have allocated approximately $700,000 towards this initiative to ensure that individuals without homes have a safe place to stay.
Andrea Tramel, the development director for Ministry with Community, a nonprofit daytime shelter, revealed that the program aims to accommodate 80 people in the facility from December 1 to the end of March. The focus will be on single adults who require shelter during the harsh winter months.
Collaborating with various nonprofits like Continuum of Care, Dignity in Motion, and Housing Resources Inc., Ministry with Community is pooling resources and facilities to support the shelters. While the emergency shelter program is temporary, it will serve as a valuable learning experience for future initiatives.
Tramel emphasized the inclusivity of the program, stating, “Anyone can come in,” and highlighting the priority to create a welcoming environment for transgender individuals. The shelters will not only provide a warm and safe place to stay but also offer nutritional dinner services to those in need.
Reflecting on the tragic incident of Tammy Christie, a homeless resident who froze to death in an abandoned car last winter, Tramel expressed her determination to prevent such occurrences in the upcoming season. She stressed the importance of addressing the systemic issues surrounding homelessness and providing stability to those in need during the winter.
As the community rallies together to combat homelessness, the initiative in Kalamazoo seeks to offer a beacon of hope and support for individuals facing the challenges of surviving on the streets during the colder months.
