Defend Public Health, a Michigan citizen volunteer group, has launched an online petition urging the governor and state health authorities to prioritize public health. Rob Lyerla, a member of the group and a professor at Western Michigan University, emphasized the importance of relying on scientific expertise and combatting pseudoscience.
State Representative Carrie Rheingans, supporting the petition, highlighted concerns over federal rollbacks in public health funding and policy changes under the Trump administration. The group cited the weakening of health institutions and lack of national coordination on public health matters as alarming.

Rheingans stressed the significance of Michigan’s involvement in multistate efforts to protect its residents’ health. The group advocates for Governor Whitmer to join organizations like the Governors Public Health Alliance to enhance communication and collaboration among states.
Lyerla emphasized that the issue goes beyond vaccines, pointing out the compromised status of renowned health institutions like the FDA, NIH, and CDC. The erosion of public trust in these institutions due to federal actions was highlighted as a significant concern.

Rheingans expressed worries about Michiganders’ healthcare coverage, particularly for Medicaid recipients, with projections of coverage loss in the coming years.
