Governor Whitmer Advocates for Trade Cooperation and Clean Energy Initiatives
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of collaboration with trade partners and criticized tariffs during her speech at the Detroit Auto Show. Whitmer highlighted the impact of federal tariffs and spending cuts on Michigan’s manufacturing sector, urging the U.S. to enhance its trade relationships for competitiveness.
While Whitmer advocated for working closely with Canada and Mexico to strengthen trade agreements, President Donald Trump, known for his tariff policies, dismissed the significance of a trade deal during his visit to Dearborn. Trump has implemented new tariffs on foreign cars, automobile parts, and semiconductors, aiming to boost domestic production.
Whitmer expressed concerns about the lack of strategic planning behind Trump’s tariffs, emphasizing the need for stability in the manufacturing sector. She proposed a more coherent approach to onshoring supply chains to support Michigan’s industrial growth.
Furthermore, Whitmer unveiled a new directive to explore the utilization of naturally occurring hydrogen as a clean energy source, emphasizing the state’s potential in sustainable energy solutions. She also called for the expansion of workforce training programs to support adult learners through initiatives like Michigan Reconnect.
The governor’s address at the Mobility Global Forum highlighted the state’s focus on economic transition strategies to prepare for future challenges. Recommendations included assisting manufacturing suppliers in diversifying, enhancing community resilience, and promoting worker training programs to adapt to evolving industries.
Jonathan Smith from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity commended the collaborative efforts to implement these recommendations, emphasizing the importance of political support for driving economic growth and workforce development in the state.
