The allure of Croatia’s stunning coastline captured my heart three decades ago, with its transparent waters revealing a world of sea life beneath. Raised near sandy lakes, I found the sight of sea cucumbers, fish, and crabs to be a mesmerizing departure from my childhood experiences.
Over the years, my visits to Croatia have been almost annual, drawn by its genuine charm that remains untouched by the trappings of mass tourism. Here are four destinations in Croatia that have become personal favorites.
“Game of Thrones” fans should take a day trip to Lokrum Island to see a replica of the Iron Throne

For those yearning to sit on the Iron Throne from HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” a visit to Lokrum Island is a must. This island, which portrayed the city of Qarth, is just a brief 15-minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik.
Once there, explore the Benedictine monastery gardens and a small exhibition featuring a replica of the Iron Throne. Non-fans of the series can enjoy floating in the salt lake (Mrtvo More), basking on secluded beaches, or photographing the island’s free-roaming peacocks.
Relax on a quiet beach along Rab’s seaside promenade

While many visitors are drawn to Lopar’s sandy shores, I prefer the serene seaside promenade between Palit and Rab. This tranquil path offers simple pleasures like morning jogs, a delicious breakfast with a view, or an invigorating swim.
Families fill the day with swimming, seashell hunting, and ice cream treats. Shady pine trees line the pathway, providing cover for small beaches. In summer, the cicadas’ hum creates a quintessential Croatian soundscape that perfectly complements a day of relaxation.
Rastoke looks like a fairy tale brought to life

Rastoke, a picturesque village located about 30 minutes from Plitvice Lakes National Park, boasts over 20 waterfalls along the Slunjčica River. With original mills, a fairy garden, and an eco museum, a visit to Rastoke feels like stepping into a bygone era.
The fairy garden, with its hidden sculptures, captivated my children, while the boardwalks allowed me to appreciate the stunning waterfalls. It’s a place where history seamlessly intertwines with natural beauty.
Imotski is one of the best hidden gems in Croatia

Imotski, perched atop a plateau and overlooking Modro Jezero (Blue Lake), offers captivating views from the Blue Lake Viewpoint. The lake, situated in a sinkhole, is ideal for swimming when water levels rise in late spring and early summer.
Even when the lake dries, the crater becomes a unique soccer field where local teams Vilenjaci (Elves) and Vukodlaci (Werewolves) face off. The nearby Topana Fortress and Crveno Jezero (Red Lake), also nestled in a sinkhole, offer additional breathtaking vistas.
Croatia’s enchanting landscapes and rich culture ensure a compelling visit. It’s a place that beckons return visits to explore even more hidden treasures.
