Tesla Launches $350 Pickleball Paddle in Collaboration with Selkirk

In a surprising twist, Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, has ventured into the world of sports equipment by launching a pickleball paddle. This new product, priced at $350, is the result of a collaboration with Selkirk, a well-known sports equipment company.

The Tesla pickleball paddle is crafted from carbon fiber with a foam core, designed specifically for “high-performance play,” as detailed on the product page. This collaboration extends beyond mere branding, with Selkirk’s co-owner and director of research and development, Tom Barnes, remarking, “This wasn’t simply a branding exercise. It was a true engineering collaboration.” He further explained that the partnership involved over a year of exchanging data and refining designs with Tesla’s team.

The idea for this unique paddle emerged from a conversation during the 2023 USA Pickleball National Championships. Barnes and Tesla engineers discussed the concept, leading to a custom batch of Tesla-themed paddles being delivered to Tesla’s staff. This effort paved the way for a meeting with Javier Verdura, Tesla’s global director of product design, at the company’s Fremont, California factory, who is also a dedicated pickleball player.

The development process included rigorous aerodynamics testing of prototypes at Tesla before finalizing the design. The limited edition paddle was in high demand, selling out on Tesla’s website in just under three hours. However, there is no information available regarding a potential restock.

Silicon Valley’s Latest Trend

This pickleball paddle marks Tesla’s first foray into traditional sports equipment, though the company has previously released other lifestyle products such as apparel, drinkware, and more. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has a history of launching collectible items, like the viral Boring Company flamethrower in 2018.

Although Tesla includes these lifestyle products in its offerings, they are not separately listed in the company’s financial reports, and there is no indication they significantly impact Tesla’s financial performance. Interestingly, Tesla’s stock rose over 2% on the day of the paddle’s release but dipped slightly in after-hours trading.

Pickleball has seen a massive surge in popularity, with participation increasing by 45.8% since 2023, according to the 2024 Pickleball Single Sport Report by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. This growth has turned pickleball from a pastime for older adults into a favored activity among tech professionals and a networking opportunity in Silicon Valley.

While entry-level pickleball equipment is affordable, with basic paddles and balls costing less than $50, the sport’s rising popularity among tech elites and celebrities has led to a demand for high-end gear. Some Selkirk paddles are priced over $150, and models like the Aero Blade 1.19, similar to Tesla’s version, cost $299 and up.

The Tesla pickleball paddle’s debut has sparked mixed reactions online. Some view it as a novel holiday gift, while others criticize its pricing and Selkirk’s choice to partner with Tesla instead of a prominent pickleball figure. Jimmy Miller, a pickleball player and podcast host, commented on social media, “Selkirks out here like ‘We are going to let every signed pro walk, and then collab with the worlds biggest brands that have nothing to do with pickleball,'” adding, “Bold strategy. Curious if it pays off. Tesla fans will probably sell that paddle out. Who is next? Apple? Maybe they can do a Nvidia collab that comes with shares!”
