Thrifter Finds $3,000 Designer Bag for $8, Confirms Authenticity

This article is based on a conversation with Kristen Boelen, the founder of Lunch Break Vintage. It has been edited for length and clarity.

From the moment she gained her driver’s license, Kristen Boelen was captivated by the allure of thrift shopping. Initially drawn to high-end fashion that eluded her budget, she discovered the art of finding similar treasures at thrift stores. This passion persisted through her college years and into her career as an art director at a wine and spirits company, where her lunch breaks provided opportunities to hunt for unique finds.

Boelen’s thrifting ventures were not just for personal collection. She often stumbled upon one-of-a-kind items that deserved a new home. Her solution was to sell these items on Whatnot. As her side business flourished, she launched Lunch Break Vintage full-time in February 2025.

A Surprising Find in the Bay Area

During a routine visit to a thrift store in the San Francisco Bay Area in December 2025, Boelen’s keen eye spotted something extraordinary. On a quiet Wednesday, two woven leather bags caught her attention. While woven bags are common, one of them stood out due to its exceptional quality.

Boelen noticed the bag’s hardware and the soft, slouchy leather, trademarks of designer quality. Her curiosity was confirmed upon discovering the logo inside. A video captures her astonishment as she realized the potential find.

Verifying the Authenticity

Using Google Lens, Boelen matched the bag to a similar model on Vestaire Collective, leading her to believe it was a retired style. Despite skepticism, she purchased the bag for $8, later confirming its authenticity with the app Authentic Detective, which values it at approximately $3,000.

Deciding to keep the bag, Boelen sees it as a future heirloom despite mixed opinions on its aesthetic. “I love it,” she asserts in response to comments on her video.

The Art of Thrifting: Skill and Serendipity

Boelen emphasizes that successful thrifting requires consistency and an eye for quality over trends. She shops three times a week, focusing on natural fibers and timeless pieces that elevate personal style. Some of her most remarkable finds originate from unexpected, remote locations, proving that hidden gems can be anywhere.
