Each December, a heartwarming scene unfolds as a Marine in dress blues presents a shiny new bicycle to a child at a local Toys for Tots distribution event. The initiative, celebrated across the nation, ensures children experience the joy of receiving gifts during the holiday season, thanks to the longstanding tradition of the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots.
Now in its 78th year, the 2025 campaign is actively underway, with Marines and volunteers nationwide collecting toys to ensure no child goes without during the holidays.
Origins of a Cherished Tradition
The concept of Toys for Tots originated in Los Angeles in 1947. Marine Reserve Major Bill Hendricks, along with his wife Diane, crafted a doll intended for donation. Lacking a suitable organization to deliver it, Hendricks and fellow Marines collected and distributed 5,000 toys that Christmas.
By the following year, the Commandant of the Marine Corps officially adopted it as a Marine Corps Reserve mission. Walt Disney created the recognizable red toy train logo, marking the beginning of what is now one of America’s most prominent holiday charity drives.
Marine Forces Reserve at the Helm

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve spearheads the Toys for Tots initiative. While the Commander of Marine Forces Reserve leads overall, local Reserve units and coordinators manage daily operations in communities across the country.
This initiative reinforces the bond between the military and the community. Retired Marine Master Sergeant Shaun Van Eaton, a dedicated volunteer, explains:
“The events that I have attended have always been amazing because this time of year, it connects the military to the community as well. Not every day you see Marines in their dress blues interacting with families and kids whether giving gifts or receiving them.”
In 2024, the campaign reached new heights, distributing over 30 million toys, books, and games to nearly 13 million children. Since its inception in 1947, the program has provided 708 million toys to over 314 million children. This year, amid ongoing economic challenges, the goal is to meet or exceed these figures.
Local Impact of Donations

Toys for Tots is deeply committed to supporting local communities. Van Eaton highlights:
“all toys and money donated in the local collection areas are given back to the local community. For example, Snohomish County [Washington] toy collections stay in the local community and don’t get sent to another state or region.”
This focus ensures that donations directly benefit children in the area. Marines collaborate with schools, agencies, and churches to identify families in need. As Van Eaton notes, the personal connection and history motivate many to donate in person, making the program truly remarkable.
Get Involved in the 2025 Campaign
The 2025 drive continues through mid-December, allowing plenty of time for contributions. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at collection points nationwide, with locations available on the official Toys for Tots website by entering your zip code. Monetary donations are also welcomed, as they enable bulk purchases, maximizing the impact of each dollar.
Volunteering opportunities abound, including sorting toys, staffing events, or driving delivery trucks. Many areas host toy runs, golf tournaments, or holiday parties, offering a chance to distribute gifts firsthand.
If your community lacks a campaign, you can even initiate one through Marine Forces Reserve. This holiday season, Toys for Tots exemplifies the Marine Corps’ dedication to supporting children and spreading holiday cheer.
