Chris Swanson Calls for Progressive Criminal Justice Approach

Michigan Gubernatorial Candidate Advocates for Criminal Justice Reform

Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson recently spoke out against ICE tactics and private prisons while promoting a more progressive approach to criminal justice. Swanson’s remarks came during an appearance at a coffee shop in Midland where he addressed various issues concerning law enforcement and education.

ICE Tactics and Private Prisons Criticized

Swanson criticized ICE’s tactics, stating that their methods are eroding public trust by using masks and driving in unmarked vehicles. He highlighted the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens by federal immigration agents, condemning the actions and emphasizing that law enforcement should be identifiable through badges and patrol cars.

Additionally, Swanson expressed his opposition to private prisons, labeling them as “dangerous” due to their profit-driven nature. He emphasized the importance of focusing on restoration and second chances rather than prioritizing financial gain.

Focus on K-12 Education Funding

Swanson joined calls to ensure that Michigan’s sales tax revenue primarily supports K-12 schools. He underscored the need to uphold the initial intention of allocating 6% of sales tax to K-12 education, which has been diverted to public universities and community colleges over the years.

Success in Genesee County and Educational Initiatives

Swanson highlighted the success of reducing crime by 40% and decreasing the jail population in Genesee County by 150 individuals. He attributed part of this achievement to the I.G.N.I.T.E program, a jailhouse education and literacy effort that he described as setting the standard for jail education nationwide.

Furthermore, Swanson pledged to oppose the establishment of private prisons and emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Michigan does not have any privately funded correctional facilities.

Upcoming Primary Election and Political Landscape

Swanson, who gained national attention for his involvement in protests following the death of George Floyd, is vying for the Michigan Democratic Primary against Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Kevin Hogan, and Marni Sawicki. The primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Overall, Swanson’s platform focuses on criminal justice reform, education funding, and opposition to private prisons, positioning him as a candidate advocating for progressive change in Michigan.
