The morning of Election Day 2026 greets you with the persistent ring of your alarm, urging you out of bed earlier than usual. The Supreme Court recently invalidated mail-in ballots, pushing many, like you, to vote in person before heading to work.

As you drive past the unemployment office, the line of people waiting seems endless, faces covered with masks due to a recent COVID surge. Despite the visible job crisis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, now led by a Heritage Foundation economist, reports a historic low in unemployment at 2%.

The usual traffic on Cordelia Street is worsened by ICE agents inspecting motorists’ IDs. You witness a man being forcibly taken from his car as he claims citizenship, his children left crying in the backseat. The scene leaves a haunting uncertainty about his destination.

At the polling station, the absence of advocacy groups like the Sierra Club and ACLU is notable after their tax-exempt status was stripped by the “Kirk Laws.” Instead, National Guardsmen, deployed for “election security,” stand by, their presence a stark reminder of the day’s heightened tensions.

Voting now requires both photo ID and proof of residency. While you have your documents ready, others are turned away, uninformed about the new requirements. “Guess I’m not voting,” laments a woman as she leaves.

Work comes with an uneasy atmosphere. Jen from accounting was fired for a social media post mocking J.D. Vance, sparking concerns about upcoming layoffs. You remember your own reprimand for sharing a controversial video of Donald Trump, as your workplace enforces its apolitical stance.

On your way home, a stop at Whole Foods reveals empty shelves where avocados should be, a result of supply chain issues. You leave behind a pint of ice cream to manage the steep grocery bill.

As results come in, it becomes clear: Republicans retain the Senate and expand their House majority. Analysts discuss the outcome, omitting the role of aggressive gerrymandering in shaping the results.

Attention shifts to the White House ballroom, where President Donald Trump, donning a Trump 2028 hat, announces his re-election bid. He hints at challenging the 22nd Amendment, with Justice Aileen Cannon questioning term limits’ constitutionality.

“If that doesn’t work,” Trump jests, “Mike will think of something!” The Speaker of the House, who will certify the next election, acknowledges with a thumbs up.

As the realization sets in, the familiar refrain of a Talking Heads song reverberates in your mind, questioning how the current state of affairs came to be. Each gradual change met resistance, yet collectively, they shifted the nation’s course.

California Rep. Robert Garcia has announced an investigation into the Trump administration and ABC following the dismissal of late show host Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel was removed after a joke about far-right activist Charlie Kirk, but suspicions about censorship and bribery involving President Trump have emerged due to Kimmel’s past disputes with him.

“Every American has a duty to stand up for our First Amendment values,” stated Garcia, co-chair of the House Oversight Committee. “We will not be silent as our freedoms are threatened by corrupt schemes and threats. Anyone who is complicit will need to answer to us.”
