Florida Lawmakers Approve Renaming Palm Beach Airport After Trump

Florida Lawmakers Approve Renaming Palm Beach International Airport to Honor Donald Trump

In a significant move, Florida legislators have decided to rename Palm Beach International Airport after former President Donald Trump, a change estimated to cost up to $5.5 million. This decision awaits the signature of Governor Ron DeSantis to become law.

The Florida Senate recently passed the bill, aligning with the Florida House’s earlier approval earlier this week. The airport, located a short distance from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, is set to be renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

Republican Senator Debbie Mayfield from Melbourne spearheaded the Senate bill, seeking funding for the renaming. Her request to the state includes the full $5.5 million, although the final expenditure is subject to further legislative negotiations as reported by Politico.

Mayfield’s proposal details $250,000 for engaging rebranding consultants to manage overhead announcements, emergency messaging, and telephone system updates. An additional $250,000 is requested for rebranding equipment, vehicles, marketing materials, and uniforms.

According to Mayfield’s funding proposal, “The airport will need resources to complete the renaming. In addition to signage, branding elements, and website updates, the airport will also make technology updates require, including overhead and emergency messaging systems and passenger processing systems, to ensure full and consistent implementation of the new airport name.”

Rebeca Krogman, a spokesperson for Palm Beach International Airport, indicated that the final costs might differ from initial estimates.

Mayfield, a state Republican supporter of the bill, highlighted the president’s contributions, stating, “He is a resident of Palm Beach County. He has had real estate in Mar-a-Lago for years in Palm Beach County before he made this his permanent residence.”

However, the renaming has faced opposition from Democrats, primarily due to the associated costs. Senator Shevrin Jones, a Democrat from South Florida, expressed concerns, saying, “The $5.5 million could pay for the infrastructure in my district that’s so desperately needed.”

Democrats have also suggested postponing the renaming until Trump’s presidency concludes, citing his past behavior as a concern. U.S. Representative Lois Frankel criticized the decision as “misguided and unfair,” stating that the renaming occurred without significant input from Palm Beach County residents.

Palm Beach County’s Position

Some Palm Beach County officials have shown indifference towards the renaming. County Commissioner Maria Sachs remarked, “I really do not see the name on our airport right now as a priority,” emphasizing other more pressing local issues.

Despite the controversy, the Trump Organization assured that the county would not bear the financial burden of the name change. They filed a trademark application to safeguard the new name, ensuring no costs would be incurred by the county for the name’s licensing.

Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo stated, “They will not charge us a penny. We anticipate a smooth transition. … I genuinely believe the president is humbled and honored that his hometown airport will bear his name.”

The airport, financially independent from county tax dollars, operates under the oversight of Abruzzo for operational decisions, while policy changes are governed by the County Commission.
