Free Bus Rides to the Polls on Election Day in Detroit

An Innovative Initiative: Free Bus Rides to the Polls in Detroit on Election Day

As Election Day approaches, Detroit’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) is offering a unique opportunity to its residents – free bus rides to the polls. In an effort to eliminate transportation barriers for voters, DDOT has announced that all bus rides within the city will be free on November 4, 2025.

City clerk Janice Winfrey emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “They’re totally free, from sunup to sundown. You can ride the bus, and we want you to use those buses to go to your polling locations and vote.” This move aims to encourage voter turnout and facilitate access to polling sites for all residents.

Additionally, DDOT has collaborated with SMART, the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation, to extend this offer to the city’s suburbs. Executive director Robert Cramer reassured residents that no identification or specific reason is required to board the bus on Election Day. “The whole day will be free for anyone that needs to ride. No questions asked,” Cramer stated.

According to Daniel Baxter, the chief of operations for the Detroit elections department, approximately 99,000 Detroit voters have already received absentee ballots. Baxter predicts that two-thirds of the voting population will opt for early and absentee voting, while the remaining third is expected to participate in traditional election polls.

It is crucial for Detroit residents to take advantage of this opportunity to exercise their right to vote. Election Day on November 4, 2025, will see polling stations open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., providing ample time for individuals to cast their ballots and make their voices heard.
