Governor Whitmer Pardons Turkeys Faygo and Vernors, Signs New Laws

Governor Whitmer Pardons Turkeys Faygo and Vernors in Annual Tradition

Each year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer participates in a quirky tradition of pardoning turkeys, and this year was no exception. The event, filled with puns and light-hearted moments, saw two turkeys named Faygo and Vernors receive a presidential pardon from the governor.

Budget Transparency Laws Signed Alongside Turkey Pardon

Aside from the festive occasion, Governor Whitmer also signed four bills into law, two of which focus on increasing budget transparency in Michigan. These new laws aim to address earmarks in the budget process and promote accountability among lawmakers.

Enhancing Legislative Police Powers and Zoo Operations

Another law signed by Governor Whitmer grants legislative police expanded jurisdiction to work across the state, ensuring the security of lawmakers and their staff. Additionally, a bill was passed to facilitate breeding programs for large carnivores in zoos, even in cases of noncompliance notices from federal agencies.
