Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Releases Recommendations
A new report released by the Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force on Monday outlined final recommendations aimed at enhancing the state’s existing gun safety laws. The 50-page report highlights measures to promote safe firearm storage and the temporary suspension of gun rights for individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.
The recommendations, developed over a year since the task force’s inception in October, include initiatives like distributing free gun locks, establishing a statewide school safety tip line, and standardizing training for school resource officers. These proposals aim to bolster the implementation of existing laws.
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the chair of the task force, emphasized the importance of effective implementation, stating, “If people don’t understand what secure storage is, if they don’t understand how to securely store their weapons…the legislation becomes meaningless.”
While the report primarily focuses on actions that state departments can enact independently without new legislation, it also suggests prioritizing measures requiring funding and resources, such as enhancing community violence prevention programs and increasing support for school safety and mental health services.
Although some policy recommendations necessitate new laws, they have faced challenges gaining approval in the state legislature. These proposals include raising the firearm purchase age, banning assault weapons and “ghost guns,” and outlawing bump stocks.
Bagdasarian underscored the urgency of addressing gun violence, highlighting that firearms are the leading cause of death among teens and children in Michigan and nationwide, surpassing fatalities from motor vehicle accidents in 2020. She called for a public health approach to tackle the issue, drawing parallels to successful efforts in improving car safety over time.
