Rep. Bill Huizenga Faces Scrutiny Over Utility Donations Amid Rate Hikes

As utility costs continue to rise across Michigan, scrutiny is growing over Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga’s financial ties to the companies responsible. With rate hikes impacting millions, questions are being raised about political donations and legislative support that could further elevate utility expenses for residents.

Rep. Bill Huizenga has reportedly received over $167,000 from the political action committees of two major utility companies: DTE Energy and Consumers Energy. DTE, which supplies gas and electricity to 1.3 million residents, recently received approval for a $242 million rate increase that has raised the monthly utility bill for the average household by 4.6%. The company has also submitted a proposal for another rate hike set to take effect in 2027.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has criticized DTE’s financial practices, stating, “DTE is raking in record profits while turning around and asking Michigan families to foot the bill for bloated, unjustified costs.” Nessel is actively advocating for a reduction in DTE’s latest rate increase request by 85%.

Consumers Energy, serving 6.7 million residents, has also been involved in rate increases. Last year, it successfully raised rates to collect an additional $153.8 million. Although its June 2025 proposal for a 13.3% increase was blocked by Nessel, the company applied for another 8.2% hike in December 2025.

During this period, Huizenga backed two federal bills that could contribute to higher utility rates. He voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which reduces clean energy investments from the Biden era and supports new AI data centers that may strain electrical resources. This legislation is projected to increase utility bills in Michigan by $320 annually.

Additionally, Huizenga endorsed a September 2025 appropriations bill that cut funding for a Department of Energy initiative aimed at helping low-income households improve energy efficiency and reduce their utility costs.

These financial burdens come amidst other economic challenges for Michigan families. Former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies have increased retail prices by 7% last year, and the ongoing war in Iran has pushed gas prices over $4 per gallon.

As Huizenga campaigns for a ninth term, he faces potential competition from a Democratic challenger to be determined in the August 4 primary.
