Rep. Mike Lawler Urges Unity Amid Staffer’s Controversial Actions

Mike Lawler

Political tensions continue to simmer as New York Representative Mike Lawler calls for more civil discourse in a recent New York Times op-ed. This appeal for unity arrives shortly after his support for a political aide embroiled in controversy over alleged disruptive tactics at a public event.

Financial contributions from Lawler’s campaign have come under scrutiny, particularly a $1,000 donation made to Erin Crowley in October 2025. Crowley, who serves as Lawler’s deputy district director, was seeking reelection to the Putnam County Legislature at the time.

Details emerged in a LoHud report that Crowley had allegedly infiltrated a protest group chat on Signal. This group, named Fight Lawler, was organizing peaceful demonstrations intended to draw attention to Lawler’s legislative actions.

Members from Fight Lawler accused Crowley of using a pseudonym to join their ranks and then inciting members to create disturbances at a Lawler town hall meeting in Somers, NY. Crowley attended the event as part of Lawler’s staff and, according to reports, played a dual role by both reprimanding attendees and encouraging further disruptions through the chat.

The town hall incident escalated, culminating in the removal of a 64-year-old woman by police, as described in a Rolling Stone article. “She infiltrated our Signal group,” said Maureen Morrissey, co-founder of Fight Lawler. “We are so sickened by it.”

Crowley’s actions prompted widespread condemnation from various political factions. Progressive entities such as the New York Working Families Party and Indivisible demanded her resignation, while Republican figures like Legislator Paul Jonke expressed disappointment. Frank Ciano, a Republican activist, suggested that Lawler should dismiss Crowley.

Despite these calls, Crowley remains employed by Lawler, as evidenced by her LinkedIn profile. Furthermore, she successfully secured another term in the Putnam County Legislature, aided by Lawler’s financial backing.

As Lawler campaigns for reelection, he faces significant challenges, with many viewing him as one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents in the upcoming elections.
