In the political landscape of New York’s 17th District, a fascinating dynamic is unfolding as Rep. Mike Lawler, who presents himself as a moderate, aligns with prominent figures from the far-right sphere. This unfolding scene comes as Lawler campaigns for reelection after a narrow victory in the previous term.
Lawler, serving the Hudson Valley area, secured his position last year with a margin of under 16,500 votes while former President Donald Trump faced a loss in the district during the same electoral period.
Fundraising with High-Profile Conservatives
In a bid to bolster his campaign, Lawler hosted a fundraiser on October 23 in Monsey, NY, alongside Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Known for his conservative stance, Cruz ranks as the third most conservative senator, according to GovTrack. Currently, Cruz is leading efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. Tickets for this event ranged from $250 to $7,000, as captured in footage by Monsey Scoop.
In another fundraising effort, Lawler teamed up with Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan at the Putnam County Golf Course. Jordan, serving as the deputy chair of the House Freedom Caucus, brought attention to the event. The Freedom Caucus had recently pushed a budget proposal targeting cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, although these measures did not pass. The ideas, however, were integrated into Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), which Lawler publicly supported.
Support for Far-Right Candidates
Lawler has extended his influence beyond New York, aiding conservative candidates in neighboring states. He recently participated in a rally to support New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli. Ciattarelli, who expressed alignment with OBBB and anti-vaccine sentiments, also engaged in spreading misinformation about immigration and transgender athletes. His campaign included appearances with figures like Jack Posobiec, known for his far-right views. Ultimately, Ciattarelli was defeated by Democrat Mikie Sherrill in the November 4 election.
Additionally, Lawler recently endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik’s gubernatorial campaign in New York. This endorsement marks an interesting turn as Lawler had previously expressed reservations about Stefanik’s chances, citing her as too extreme. Stefanik’s platform includes support for a nationwide abortion ban and the repeal of Obamacare, alongside pardoning participants in the January 6 Capitol riot. Her campaign has also received Trump’s endorsement.
Riya Vashi, a spokesperson for the DCCC, commented, “Mike Lawler will toss New Yorkers aside in a heartbeat if it keeps him in Donald Trump’s good graces.” She further noted, “From enabling Trump’s extreme agenda to backing his dangerous ‘Ultra MAGA’ ally in New York for Governor, Mike Lawler keeps reminding Hudson Valley voters exactly who he works for — and it’s certainly not them.”
Looking ahead, several Democrats have already announced their campaigns to challenge Lawler in the upcoming year.
