Tom Barrett’s Roundtable Event Features GOP Donor, Sparks Controversy

Tom Barrett

In Michigan, a recent small business roundtable led by Rep. Tom Barrett sparked interest due to the presence of a prominent Republican donor and campaign consultant. The event was intended to highlight the advantages of a new Republican budget that has been met with both praise and skepticism.

Event Highlights and Key Participants

The August 20 gathering was promoted as a forum for “small business owners from across the community” to discuss the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This Act, endorsed by President Donald Trump on July 4, aims to rejuvenate the economy by cutting costs for families and supporting small businesses.

“We are taking historic action to protect our small businesses, cut costs for working families, and give a much needed boost to Michigan’s economy,” Barrett shared on X, showcasing images from the event that featured Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler.

Prominent Attendee: Scott Greenlee

Among the attendees was Scott Greenlee, founder of Greenlee Consulting in Grand Rapids. Barrett highlighted Greenlee’s participation in a separate X post, recognizing his firm as one of the businesses present.

Greenlee has a long history in politics, with his consulting firm having earned $200,000 since 2010 for advising Republican campaigns in Michigan, including the gubernatorial campaign of Tudor Dixon. His contributions to Republican candidates, including $1,916.10 to Barrett this year, are well-documented.

Additionally, Greenlee runs the Patriots Fund, a political action committee in Michigan, which has exclusively endorsed Barrett for the 2026 election.

Debate Over the Budget’s Impact

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes tax cuts for small businesses, though there are concerns that any financial relief might be nullified by increasing prices and tariffs. According to the Detroit Regional Chamber, “About 242,000 small businesses import goods each year … and many are already struggling with rising costs and uncertainty.”

Political Context

Representing Michigan’s 7th District, encompassing much of Lansing, Barrett seeks re-election for a second term and is considered one of the more vulnerable Republican incumbents in the upcoming election cycle.
