Tensions Rise as U.S. Criticizes Russia’s Latest Military Actions Near Ukraine
In a significant development amid the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, the United States has criticized Russia for what it calls a “dangerous and inexplicable escalation” in hostilities. The criticism was directed at the recent launch of a nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile, which occurred close to Ukraine’s border with Poland, a NATO member.
During an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, U.S. deputy ambassador Tammy Bruce expressed concern over the increasing number of casualties and condemned the intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure. The meeting was convened following a major Russian offensive using drones and missiles, including the new hypersonic Oreshnik missile, marking only its second use. This offensive was perceived as a clear signal to NATO allies of Kyiv.
This military action occurred shortly after Ukraine and its allies reported advancements in negotiations to safeguard the nation against further Russian aggression, should a peace deal led by the U.S. be finalized. Additionally, the assault aligned with heightened tensions between the U.S. and Russia, exacerbated by Russia’s disapproval of the U.S.’s seizure of an oil tanker.
Amid these developments, President Donald Trump has shown support for a stringent sanctions package aimed at crippling Russia economically. Despite these pressures, Russia has maintained its firm stance on Ukraine, with the Russian U.N. ambassador attributing the diplomatic stalemate to Ukraine’s position.
European leaders have condemned the missile launch as “escalatory and unacceptable,” a sentiment echoed by U.S. envoy Bruce, who emphasized the need for both parties to seek de-escalation. “At a moment of tremendous potential, due only to President Trump’s unparalleled commitment to peace around the world, both sides should be seeking ways to de-escalate,” she stated. “Yet Russia’s action risks expanding and intensifying the war.”

Bruce highlighted that Russia had previously supported a Security Council resolution calling for an end to the conflict. “It would be nice if Russia matched their words with deeds,” she remarked. “In the spirit of that resolution, Russia, Ukraine and Europe must pursue peace seriously and bring this nightmare to an end.”
In contrast, Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia insisted that until Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agrees to realistic negotiation terms, Russia will continue its military approach. “He was warned long ago, with each passing day, each day which he squanders, the conditions for negotiations will only get worse for him,” Nebenzia stated.
Ukraine’s U.N. Ambassador Andriy Melnyk countered by highlighting Russia’s vulnerabilities, noting a slowing economy and decreased oil revenue. “Russia wants to sell to this council and the whole U.N. family the impression that it is invincible, but this is another illusion,” he told the council, arguing that Russia’s projection of strength is “nothing but smoke and mirrors.”
