Arizona Implements AI Technology to Enhance Wildfire Detection
In a groundbreaking move, Arizona has integrated artificial intelligence technology into its wildfire detection efforts, utilizing cameras developed by Pano. These AI-powered cameras are strategically positioned in wildfire-prone regions and are tasked with identifying smoke, thereby providing early alerts to the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM).
State Forester Tom Torres emphasized the importance of this technological advancement, stating, “We’re not eliminating wildfire risk. In fact, the threat seems to be increasing. But we’re getting smarter, we’re getting faster, and we’re getting more aligned.” The collaboration with partners across the state is seen as a pivotal strategy in addressing the challenges posed by wildfires.
Governor Katie Hobbs echoed this sentiment, highlighting the state’s proactive approach: “We are leveraging emerging technologies and staying ahead of the curve to keep people safe and mitigate the threat of wildfires, while making it easier for our first responders to do their jobs.”
According to DFFM Fire Management Officer John Truett, the wildfire season has commenced earlier than usual. He noted, “We already are four to six weeks ahead of normal on our vegetation drying. Governor Hobbs stated that we’re doing some prescribed burns, but now we are getting to the point where … the vegetation is too dry for us to do controlled burns.”
The AI cameras serve as a modern substitute for traditional, human-staffed fire towers, as explained by DFFM Director of Operations Russ Shumate. Although the AI cameras might not have the extensive range of human observation, they offer quicker and more precise location data for potential fire outbreaks. “We just went operational, it looks like we detected one today,” Shumate mentioned.
Currently, each AI camera is capable of monitoring a 10-mile radius, and the technology has been active in Arizona for a couple of weeks. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to employing innovative solutions for fire prevention and management.
