Congressman Greg Stanton Criticizes Trump’s $1.776B Settlement Fund

Controversial Fund Sparks Bipartisan Criticism

A proposed settlement fund linked to former President Donald Trump has become a focal point of contention, drawing criticism from both sides of the political aisle. Arizona Democrat Greg Stanton has notably commended Republican colleagues for their opposition to the fund that has stirred debate in Washington.

The fund in question, amounting to $1.776 billion, was created following a lawsuit Trump filed against the IRS over leaked tax returns. The Department of Justice, as part of the settlement, intends to use this fund for individuals allegedly affected by “lawfare and weaponization.” Critics fear it could provide financial support to those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Stanton criticized the initiative, labeling it as an act of corruption. “A ridiculous settlement, $1.776 billion slush fund that’s going to pay off his friends and cronies and includes protection liability protection for he and his entire family for any action by the IRS,” he remarked.

The settlement includes a provision, signed by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche—a Trump appointee and his former personal lawyer—that prevents the IRS from auditing tax claims related to Trump, his family, and his businesses permanently.

Resistance to the fund crosses party lines, with certain GOP senators opposing its establishment. This discord has stalled a separate immigration enforcement funding bill in recent legislative sessions.

“Thank goodness there are some strong Republicans standing up to this corruption, bipartisan bills to end this ridiculous fund and never let it happen anytime in the future,” Stanton expressed.

Additionally, a contentious feature of the fund involves channeling $1 billion of it towards constructing a ballroom planned by Trump, which has further fueled the bipartisan discontent.
