French Teen Faces Legal Trouble in Singapore Over Viral Video
A video that rapidly gained traction on social media has led to legal issues for an 18-year-old French student in Singapore. The incident involves Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, who is now facing charges of mischief and public nuisance. The charges stem from a video showing him licking a straw from a juice vending machine and returning it to its place.
According to reports from The Straits Times, Maximilien was charged on April 24, with the event having occurred on March 12 in a local shopping mall. The student, who has yet to enter a plea, will be allowed to travel to Manila for a school trip from May 2 to 25, a requirement for his graduation. He is scheduled to reappear in court on May 29.
The consequences of a mischief conviction in Singapore can include a prison term of up to two years, a fine, or both. Public nuisance charges carry lighter penalties, with imprisonment up to three months, a fine, or both.
The company responsible for the juice machine, IJooz, responded swiftly by filing a police report and ensuring the machine’s hygiene. They sanitized the dispenser and replaced all 500 straws. Looking forward, IJooz plans to enhance their machines with individually packaged straws and secure compartments that unlock post-transaction.
Despite inquiries, Maximilien’s legal representatives have chosen not to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings. The student is currently enrolled at a French business school in Singapore.
Singapore is known for its stringent regulations on public behavior and cleanliness, which include bans on chewing gum and strict penalties for offenses such as littering and vandalism.
