Kash Patel, the FBI Director, recently faced a setback in his legal battle over allegations related to his leadership style. A federal judge in Houston dismissed Patel’s defamation lawsuit against Frank Figliuzzi, a former FBI official who made claims about Patel’s frequent nightclub visits during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe in May 2025.

As reported by CNBC, U.S. District Court Judge George Hanks Jr. ruled against Patel’s lawsuit. Figliuzzi had suggested that Patel was seen at nightclubs more often than at his FBI office, remarks that Patel argued could be interpreted literally.

Judge Hanks dismissed Patel’s claims, labeling the remarks as “rhetorical hyperbole.” In his decision, he stated, “The Court finds that Figliuzzi’s statement is rhetorical hyperbole that cannot constitute defamation.” The judge further explained that a reasonable person would not take Figliuzzi’s comments literally.

In a separate legal move, Patel has filed a $250 million defamation suit against The Atlantic and journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick over an article that cited anonymous sources accusing him of excessive drinking and absenteeism. This lawsuit follows recent reports of Patel’s controversial actions, including using FBI resources for personal purposes and organizing combat training for FBI agents with UFC fighters.
