France and Germany Abandon Ambitious New-Generation Fighter Jet Project

The collaboration between France and Germany to create a state-of-the-art fighter jet has been halted, marking a significant setback in European defense ambitions. German officials revealed on Monday that the leaders of the two nations decided to abandon the initiative after discussions held during the EU-Western Balkans summit in Montenegro.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany and French President Emmanuel Macron reached this conclusion after realizing the stalemate that has impeded progress for months. The €100-billion ($116 billion) venture was a major endeavor aimed at enhancing Europe’s military capabilities, which have been underfunded for years. The project was intended to develop a primary fighter jet that would be accompanied by drones and integrated through a sophisticated “combat cloud.” However, disagreements over the project’s specifications and control have persisted.

According to a European source, there may be a diplomatic resolution allowing the continuation of specific systems under the designation Future Combat Air System (FCAS). This solution, albeit largely symbolic, could enable the preservation of the FCAS name for the remaining components beyond the core fighter jet. Macron aimed to maintain a portion of the project without fully admitting its termination.

Initially launched by Macron and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2017, the fighter jet project was an emblem of European aerospace collaboration. Despite the efforts by Macron and Merz to resolve issues among the key partners, Airbus and Dassault Aviation, progress stalled due to conflicting views on control and technology.

Divergent military needs further complicated matters. Chancellor Merz expressed skepticism about the necessity of a manned sixth-generation fighter jet for Germany’s air force, questioning the need for a nuclear-capable aircraft that can operate from an aircraft carrier. This fundamental difference in requirements played a crucial role in the project’s dissolution.
