Charlie Kirk Memorial Proposal Faces Rejection in Phoenix
Efforts to commemorate conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who tragically lost his life in a shooting in Utah last September, have emerged across various cities in the Valley. Among these efforts, a notable proposal involved renaming a prominent bridge in Phoenix to honor Kirk.
Charlie Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, is headquartered in Phoenix. Civil rights activist Jarrett Maupin spearheaded a petition to rename the Seventh Street bridge near Chase Field after Kirk, aiming to secure a lasting tribute in the city.
Scheduled to present his case before the Phoenix City Council, Maupin was absent when Mayor Kate Gallego called for him to speak during the council meeting on Wednesday.
Mayor Kate Gallego addressed the situation, stating, “Item 40 is a citizen petition submitted by Jarrett Maupin. Uh, we have two speakers on this item. We’ll begin with Mr. Maupin. … uh, Mr. Maupin?” Despite the anticipation, Maupin did not appear to advocate for the proposal.
Ultimately, the council decided against the renaming initiative. City staff explained that the proposal failed to align with the city’s established criteria for ceremonial signage, leading to its rejection.
